Hops

What is Hops?

You probably recognise hops (Humulus lupulus) as being one of the key ingredients in beer, however it is also a widely used herbal remedy for a number of indications. Hops has a mild sedative and calming action and may help to relieve insomnia and reduce the effects of mild anxiety. The relaxant effect of hops stemmed from the observation of sleepiness in European hops-pickers1. Hops is also traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as an ‘aromatic bitter’ or herb that aids digestion.

The climbing nature of the Humulus lupulus plant influenced its common name, as it is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hoppan’, which means ‘to climb’2.
