What is Ziziphus?

Ziziphus spinosa (red date) is a herb used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its mild sedative action and calming effect on the nerves and mind. Its common name ‘red date’ refers to its similar appearance and taste to the date palm. From a Chinese medicine perspective, Ziziphus nourishes the heart and calms the shen (spirit), thus assisting with symptoms of ‘shen disturbance’ like irritability, insomnia or shallow sleep with a tendency to wake easily.

The calming effect of ziziphus is believed to be especially beneficial for women and is used in TCM to relieve irritability, night sweats or spontaneous sweating, which are frustrating symptoms associated with the onset of menopause.

Why your body needs Ziziphus?

Many of us experience periods of sleeplessness where we just can’t seem to switch off our restless mind and may need a little natural assistance. Because of its traditional use in Chinese herbal medicine as a mild sedative, ziziphus may be helpful in encouraging a good night’s sleep and relieving sleeplessness or insomnia. Ziziphus may help you fall asleep and stay asleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face the day ahead.

Ziziphus may also be beneficial for women going through the natural transition of menopause and may help ease night-time menopause symptoms such as spontaneous sweating or night sweats, irritability and sleeplessness.
