What are Hops?

Hops are the seed cones from the Humulus lupulus plant. The plant is a climbing vine belonging native to Europe, Asia, and North America. The common name ‘hop’ is derived from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan (to climb).1

 

Hops have been used therapeutically around the globe. Use of hops in Europe dates back to the ninth century. Before that hops were used in making beer and bread, and also as a salad vegetable. In traditional Western herbal medicine, it is used to relieve sleeplessness and calm nerves.2
